denturesThere are many different factors to consider when budgeting for dentures. This article will talk about the various options available so that consumers can made educated decisions.

A Proven Medical Necessity – Paying with Insurance Coverage

Many dental insurance companies will pay a percentage of the cost of one’s dentures under their standard plans, if a physician or dentist has deemed them medically necessary. In almost all cases, this is not true of medical insurance plans. Upon rare occasion, if a party is injured in an automobile accident, one’s automobile insurance will pick up the costs.

Typically, patients can expect their dental insurance carriers to cover from 15 – 50% of the costs.

Before committing to purchase dentures using insurance, the prospective wearer should find out whether the insurance company offers major coverage or prosthetic coverage. Patients should be aware that typically, there will be a limit on replacing damaged or lost dentures, however.

Insurance companies will usually have an allowance that limits the amount or percentage that they will pay. For example, if one’s dental professional charges $1200 for a complete set of dentures, the insurance company may only cover $700 of that amount. Often, the participating dentist will adjust his or her prices when working with insurance companies.

Questions to Ask One’s Dental Professional When Considering Dentures

When considering the costs associated with getting dentures, prospective denture wearers should ask their dental professional about the methods used to fit the dentures and whether or not there will be an additional charge for the fitting. Since the materials used can make a big difference in the price, patients should know ahead of time what their dentures will be made of. They should also inquire about how many followup appointments are included in the overall price of their dentures.

Tooth Extraction Adds to the Overall Costs of Dentures

One consideration that many people do not initially figure into the overall cost of their dentures is the cost of removing the existing teeth. Prices vary for this service, depending on whether the patient opts for simple tooth extraction or surgical extraction. Typically, prices are charges per tooth and can range from $75 – 400 per tooth for simple extractions and from $150, up to as much as $650 per tooth for surgical extraction.

Dental Implants

On average, the most expensive type of dentures are dental implants. The charges for implants depends on the number of implants and the style or type of implant. For example, mini-implants cost considerably less than other types of implants. If a patient already has an existing denture plate, this can also cut the cost of implants, as they can be adapted for use with the existing plate. Implants can cost between $7000 – 90,000, depending on the material used and the type of procedure that is needed to implement them.

Other Costs

Over time, dentures may need to be refitted. Like natural teeth, they can also break or crack at times. Repairs can cost anywhere in the range of from $50 to $200. Adjusting a fit can run from $250, up to $50. There are also self-repair kits that are available for a minimal charge.

  • My dentist charged me over $3100 to do my complete dentures. He had to extract about 19 teeth that were ate up with decay! Most had holes and were falling apart! What was bad is he told me i had bought a complete package but then after about 4 months when it was time to do a final fitting he wanted $350.00 more for laboratory charges! Considering what i paid should i be paying for this laboratory charge? Seems like it would need a part of the intial fee.

  • My grandparents have been wanting to get dentures to replace the teeth that they are losing. That would be a really nice to get them some nice ones for a great price. The fact that you are giving the usual prices for dentures is going to help give them an idea of what it is going to cost them.

  • It seems important to learn about any additional costs that may be included when it comes to getting dentures. I didn’t know that having any teeth extracted will increase the price for dentures. Are tooth extractions usually covered by most dental insurance plans? I have a few teeth that are infected that need to be taken out so that I can replace them with dentures. It would really help if the cost to have those teeth extracted will be covered by my insurance premium.
