Hysterectomy Cost Summary

A. Price Range = $7,000 – $13,000
B. Average Cost = $9,500
C. Cheapest Price = $7,300

Hysterectomies used to be a life-threatening procedure that had numerous lifestyle consequences. However, today they are safer, easier, and have faster recovery rates. There are also medications to offset the consequences of losing the uterus prematurely. This procedure can be done by the laparoscopic method or open method. It’s also important to realize that the type of hysterectomy performed will have an effect on the total cost.

Robotic Hysterectomy

Technology has made it possible to have robotic-assisted hysterectomies performed. It’s more expensive than other methods, but it’s becoming widespread in hospitals across the country. Only about 10 percent of hysterectomies are done using the robotic method, but this number is quickly climbing. Surgeons and hospitals are making broad and lofty claims that this technique is less invasive and results in less pain and scarring.

Robotic hysterectomies are not less painful. They are not the least invasive either (vaginal hysterectomies are the least invasive hysterectomy method). The robotic surgery method has an average reported cost of approximately $11,500.

Laparascopic Hysterectomy

This method uses a few small incisions to insert cameras and tools so that the surgeon can remove the uterus. Laparascopic hysterectomies make up about 29 percent of all hysterectomies. Even though it’s not the most common method, it’s considered one of the best.

In Phoenix, Arizona the average laparascopic hysterectomy cost is approximately $8,300. Women in Los Angeles pay the most on average at about $11,600 whilte patients in Dallax, Texas pay the least on average in major cities with an average cost of around $7,700.

Open Hysterectomy

Open hysterectomies are still the most commonly performed hysterectomy. Despite higher costs and risks, it is still the primary choice of surgeons and physicians across the country. Open hysterectomies cost about $12,800 on average. This method is overall more expensive because hospital stay is required after the surgery is performed. The average hospital stay after an open hysterectomy is about three days.

Vaginal Hysterectomy

This is the least invasive choice for a hysterectomy. A small incision is made inside the vagina to access the uterus, and the uterus is carefully removed through the vaginal opening. A few stitches are put in place. This procedure costs an average of $7,166.

Conclusion

There are four main options when getting a hysterectomy: robotic, open, laparoscopic and vaginal hyterectomies. Surgeons may not give you a choice in what kind of surgery you receive. If you have a preference due to cost, then it is important you speak with different surgeons. Insurance companies may also force you to choose a specific method for surgery.

  • That’s funny my girlfriends hysterectomy is adding up to about $200,000. I don’t know where you get there numbers. The really funny thing is they messed up the first surgery, air got into her abdomen and she almost died. The 2nd surgery fixed it but they sent her the bill!! And the 3rd funny part to te story is not one attorney in los angrles (and there are many) will take the case. Healthcare in this country is a damn joke.
